I spent a week here as the campground was green and lush and had hot showers.  The pretty little town is a ten minute walk from the campground and also a ten minute walk from the beach and lighthouse.

It was most pleasant and I made friends with a nice couple, Douglas and Jan, from Vancouver Island who were camped next to me.  Honestly, I was nearly the lone Yank amidst all the Canadians.

The mission there was a short hike, but seemingly permanently closed. 

Typically, I waited until the weekend to check out the historic jail where prisoners were allowed out during the day and returned to the jail at night.  Not a bad gig, I suppose, if you were quite poor.  It is closed on weekends.

I next drove just a very short distance south to Playa Santispac.  No electric, water, or showers, but as peaceful a beach location as you can imagine.  I got to wake up to this:

The place is very popular with snowbirds, with many staying there the entire winter.  Trucks will come around with non-potable water or propane, and there is a dump station on site.  It’s only 10-15 minutes from Mulege, so groceries aren’t far off.

The main part of the place is one long line of sites, mostly with palapas that some folks fix up rather nicely.

But, when I paid at the front gate, the dude pointed past a slightly rocky point and said “Menos viento.”  And, indeed, it was a smaller, quiter area with less wind.

My neighbors were from Alberta and full-time RVers for a year.  Each morning the dad and his seven-year-old son would use their inflatable kayak to go out on the bay for an hour.  The kayak was surprisingly firm and stable and I am now guilty of one of the Seven Deadly Sins.  When get back home I must have a kayak like that.
