Loreto, BCS, Mexico
Next up on the trip was…
The original capital of Los Californios (Baja y Norte), Loreto is a pretty vibrant town. It also has an excellent if somewhat tightly packed campground with full hookups about 1/2 block from the main plaze and 1/2 block from the ocean.
One of the things sorely lacking in Baja is turnouts or vista points where you can grab pictures of the terrain (how’s that for a First World complaint?) I did find one, however, just north of Loreto.
Just up from the campground was the lovely plaza. Full of shops carrying things you don’t need, lots of great bars and restaurants, a spa or two, the mission, etc.
The malecón was nice enough, but nowhere near as interesting as the plaza and pedisterian street attached to it. I might have gone out on a boat snorkeling or somesuch but it was consistently windy there (notice the whitecaps) so I skipped it.
There was a farmer’s market on Sunday that I was keen to check out. While the three vendors there had a good selection of produce, overall it was somewhat underwhelming.
There are excellent restaurants in Loreto. I ate at an Italian place with a definite Uruguayan influence. There was a BBQ joint, two brewpubs, a couple of Japanese places, and Soul food, as well, though I didn’t try it.
And, if you’re in the market for geckos, Loreto is the place for you!
Oh, and the mission had a nice museum attached and it was open when I wanted to visit. Such a novelty for me!
Overall a very pleasant place to stay for five nights.
