Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras
As with FOB Westbrook, the accommodations are starting to take shape as we modify them to the extent allowed. Sponsors (our local units when we clear quarantine) take pity on us and will deliver anything reasonable.
We now have a geedunk table, complete with coffee pot and package after package of USO-donated coffee from Ft. Bliss. One guy has a 30” TV for gaming and others brought smaller game units. We discovered some tri-walls full of folding chairs, so have been absconding with them regularly.
Libations, too, are getting to be more plentiful. Not to name names, but certain person or persons (and possibly the physician with whom they were traveling) might have packed some adult beverages in their luggage they brought to Honduras. And our, I mean their, unit might have been generous in procuring local libations, the better to endure our quarantine with.
We are just now starting the wet season. Every afternoon or evening, and some mornings, the mountains disappear in clouds and then you hear the distant thunder. A breeze will pick up, then the temperature drops 10-15 degrees. Lightning begins and soon you are running to get inside the tent before the rain becomes torrential and the wind kicks into a frenzy. The rain on the tents is a roar even through noise-canceling headphones, and you can feel the thunder through your cot.
Today ends Week One. Or Three, depending on how you count it.
Food delivered to our table. Everything coming in is supposed to go on the table. At least in theory.
Quarantine nightlife.
Outdoor entertainment when weather allows.
And indoors when it doesn’t.
