Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras
Not much to say really, though many people expressed interest in what conditions are like here, so perhaps a few words on food.
The food at Westbrook was better than quarantine food here at Soto Cano. (I’m told the mess hall here is quite good.) Both places dish up a generous amount of food in a Styrofoam box, but Westbrook brought us many other goodies: sweet rolls, sheet cakes, daily fruit, and nightly salads. Twice they brought us ice cream! That being said, it was two hots and an MRE (for lunch) per day at Westbrook.
We get three hots per day here, but never any salad or extra goodies other than small packages of cereal at breakfast. The food isn’t bad, but not much variety. And rice with every single meal. Quite often along with potatoes. Three helpings of carbs with a meal in not unheard of. We’ve ordered from Subway twice (thanks to Farrah!) and the fresh veggies in those sandwiches were a treat.
Just one more full day and a wake up, then we get paroled. We still won’t be allowed off post, and almost nothing on post is open, until the COVID restrictions are relaxed.
On a few days the clouds and mist that usually hover over the mountains dissipated and we had a clear few. Base on the number of lights at night, the mountains to the west seem to have a good population.
The only time I’ve worn shoes here was when I’ve run. Otherwise we all just wear flip-flops. There are no-see-ums that are eating us up. Derreck says they are sand fleas but, true to their name, I’ve never seen ’em.
The medical officers quarantined here continue to meet up for dinner and libations. We have a relatively quiet corner, away from noisy generators and AC units. Unit members who have already quarantined have been generous in keeping us supplied with salty snacks and adult beverages.
