Simply because we are quarantined deep in the Chihuahuan Desert doesn’t mean we have to live like barbarians.

This found posted on the inside of the door to one of the stalls in the latrine. Apparently First Squadron of the 3rd Stryker Cavalry Regiment (1/3 SCR) was here in February prior to the FOB being used for quarantine and me thinks they were having some fun spoofing the ubiquitous Army warnings you find posted all over.

I’ve known since last summer that I would be spending this summer in Honduras with the Army Reserves. I was supposed to have left weeks ago, but this whole global pandemic thing is cramping everyone’s style. They finally decided to move me to Texas where the original plan was to spend a week of in-processing before flying to Honduras where I would quarantine. Dedicated readers of my blog (pause for belly-laugh) will be relieved to know that I got my 24’ trailer (yes, 24’, not 19’ as presumed) to Fort Irwin without incident. I subsequently spent 15 days living in it and it just wasn’t so very bad at all. Cozy, but comfortable. For the amount of money saved, I should have done this long ago. Sure, it rocks around like crazy in the wind, but that was to be expected.

Soldiers training here spend two weeks in “The Box” which is the field training area. If they need medical care, they first see a provider (usually a PA) at their battalion aid station. For further care they are evacuated to their brigade treatment area. After that they are evacuated to me for treatment or referral to the Emergency Department. Tonight we had a PFC evac’d for suspected bat bite.

People in medicine are very superstitious. I learned as a student never, ever, to use the word “slow” in an emergency room. Not unless you want all the nurses to hate you.

i arrived at work today to find a full parking lot. I’d ask for a reserved spot, but people who drive armored vehicles don’t pay much attention to such things. Besides, my boss would laugh at me. More than usual.
