Three Weeks With Hearing Aids

December 2nd, 2016
Calcium, NY

I’ve known for many years that my hearing sucked.  I had long attributed this to my four years of active duty in the Army in the early 1980s, but I later saw an audiogram taken when I first joined the Army and there was marked hearing loss even then.  I know I had a lot of ear infections as a kid, but lots of kids have those without much hearing loss.  I shot 22s (and an occasional 45 or 12-gauge shotgun) a lot as a teen and never used hearing protection, but none of my friends I shot with had hearing damage from that.

M&M

August 31tst, 2015
Fort Drum, NY

For the most part we have civilian Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) at our clinic who room patients, do vitals, and get the history of why they want to be seen.  We also have a handful of medics who do the same.  The two best medics are known as “M&M” since their last names both begin with M.  They were both working with me on Saturday for a special clinic to knock out school physicals, as it is that time of year.

Rescue in Corona

May 29th, 2015
Riverside, CA

Was part of a cool rescue of a lost 24-year-old this week.  My GoPro had a dead battery (grrr!) but I started my point and shoot camera in video mode and handed it to a deputy who filmed the hoist.  Original video here.  CBS News story here.  RMRU write up here.

It was a Good Day.

Playing Army

July 24th, 2014
Camp Parks, Calif.

It’s that time of year again and I’m in uniform for two weeks with the Army Reserve.  My Sustainment Brigade is lead on a logistics exercise in the Bay Area of California.  Half of us are at Camp Park (East of Oakland, near Livermore), the other half at the Port of Alameda (adjacent to Oakland).
