On Active Duty

Fort Bragg, NC

Well, after a 2400 mile trip across the country, I arrived at Fort Bragg on Friday at about 1400.  My orders said to report first to Lubbock, TX, but I had been advised to ignore that and report to Fort Bragg.  The orders then said to report to building 3-2525.  I checked with some impossibly young privates manning the gate who gave me a general direction, but not with much confidence.

Rescue in Corona

May 29th, 2015
Riverside, CA

Was part of a cool rescue of a lost 24-year-old this week.  My GoPro had a dead battery (grrr!) but I started my point and shoot camera in video mode and handed it to a deputy who filmed the hoist.  Original video here.  CBS News story here.  RMRU write up here.

It was a Good Day.

Military Ambiance

Dedicated readers of my blog (pause for belly-laugh) will be relieved to know that I got my 24’ trailer (yes, 24’, not 19’ as presumed) to Fort Irwin without incident.  I subsequently spent 15 days living in it and it just wasn’t so very bad at all.  Cozy, but comfortable.  For the amount of money saved, I should have done this long ago.  Sure, it rocks around like crazy in the wind, but that was to be expected.

I Hate Hauling Trailers

February 15th, 2015
Riverside, CA

In order to save money while working at Fort Irwin, today I purchased a 19’ travel trailer. I go back to pick it up tomorrow and, either tomorrow or Wednesday, will haul it up to Fort Irwin. The hotel up there is $99/night. The campground is $15. I spend 150 night per year there. Financially, it’s a no-brainer.
