The Remote Medic Goes (Far) East For Medical Skills

A little over a year ago there was a doc on my team who was also a certified acupuncturist.  Her certification was in western medical acupuncture, not traditional Chinese acupuncture.  Part of what she did was something new to me called Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA).  It seemed a little hokey, but the coworkers she performed it on swore that it helped with pain.  At least some of her patients loved it.

My departure from Fort Bragg was slightly delayed due to complications on the urinalysis.  Eager to get going on the road, I stepped up first and proffered that I was ready to perform the required function.  The monitor escorted me to the men’s room where I…failed to provide an adequate sample.  I misfired.  That’s never happened before.

Military Ambiance

Dedicated readers of my blog (pause for belly-laugh) will be relieved to know that I got my 24’ trailer (yes, 24’, not 19’ as presumed) to Fort Irwin without incident.  I subsequently spent 15 days living in it and it just wasn’t so very bad at all.  Cozy, but comfortable.  For the amount of money saved, I should have done this long ago.  Sure, it rocks around like crazy in the wind, but that was to be expected.

Rare Sighting of Mojave Chupacabra

Soldiers training here spend two weeks in “The Box” which is the field training area.  If they need medical care, they first see a provider (usually a PA) at their battalion aid station.  For further care they are evacuated to their brigade treatment area.  After that they are evacuated to me for treatment or referral to the Emergency Department.  Tonight we had a PFC evac’d for suspected bat bite.
